Forvia is looking for a HSE Graduate Intern

Applicants must hold a National Diploma in one of the following; Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, HSE Management, Environmental Health, Environmental Management, or a related qualification. Candidates should have strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to coordinate activities across different departments. Knowledge of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) tools and methods such as the 5 Why methodology, work instructions, audits, and ISO standards including ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 will be beneficial. Applicants should be between the ages of 18 and 35, have 0–1 years of experience in an HSE-related environment, and must not have previously been registered in the Youth Employment Service (YES) programme. The successful candidate must also be able to read, write and speak English.

The YES HSE Graduate position is based in Pretoria (Rosslyn) within the Health, Safety and Environment department and will run on a 12-month contract. The successful candidate will report to the Plant HSE Manager in Pretoria as well as the Country HSE Manager. This opportunity is designed to provide a graduate with practical workplace exposure while developing knowledge and experience in health, safety, and environmental management within an industrial manufacturing environment.

The main purpose of the role is to support management in ensuring that all health, safety and environmental procedures are properly implemented and maintained within the plant. The graduate will assist with ensuring that the company complies with relevant legislation as well as the organization’s internal HSE policies, procedures and systems. Through the programme, the candidate will gain valuable experience in safety processes, incident reporting, audits and compliance monitoring.

One of the responsibilities of the role includes assisting with the collection and reporting of safety data related to incidents and workplace risks. This includes contributing to the reporting of FR1T and FR2T statistics and helping investigate incidents when required. The graduate will also support the monitoring and distribution of transversal memos throughout the plant to ensure that they are acknowledged, recorded and closed off appropriately within the system.

The role will also involve encouraging employees to report workplace incidents and near-miss events. Promoting a proactive safety culture is an important aspect of the position, and the graduate will assist in reinforcing procedures that support safer working practices across the plant. Conducting daily safety audits and participating in Gemba tours to observe workplace processes will also form part of the learning experience.

In addition, the graduate will support the coordination and facilitation of safety training sessions and committee meetings. Responsibilities may include preparing documentation, assisting with training delivery where required, and taking minutes during HSE committee meetings. Maintaining accurate documentation and ensuring proper filing and document control will also be part of the daily administrative responsibilities.

The successful candidate will also assist with internal and external audits across the plant, including ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 compliance audits. Monitoring the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), issuing work permits where required, and assisting with contractor permit processes will contribute to maintaining safety standards across operations.

Additional duties may include assisting with Department of Labour injury-on-duty (IOD) enquiries, coordinating clinic activities, maintaining the HSE training centre, and supporting initiatives that aim to improve safety performance within the plant. The graduate will also help manage improvement ideas related to HSE and assist in monitoring security and safety processes to ensure ongoing compliance.
