The primary responsibility of this role is the accurate handling of all Point of Sale transactions and related documentation. The successful candidate must ensure that no goods or stock pass through the POS without being paid for. This includes correctly identifying and capturing goods on the POS terminal, recording the correct payment type received from customers, and ensuring that all transactions are processed according to company procedures. Maintaining sufficient change at all times and ensuring that pick-ups and cash-ups are conducted accurately within set parameters are critical aspects of the role. At the end of each shift, the cashier must ensure that daily takings are properly dropped into the drop safe or vault and that all transactions relating to other stores’ money, deliveries, and quotes are processed correctly.

To qualify for this position, applicants must have Grade 12 or a minimum of one year’s related work experience. Candidates must be able to communicate effectively in English and the dominant language spoken in the geographical area where the position is based. The ability to perform basic calculations accurately is essential, along with strong administration skills. Applicants must be willing to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays, and must demonstrate the ability to work effectively under pressure in a busy retail environment.

Cash handling forms a key performance area within this role. The cashier is responsible for ensuring that all allocated cash, including floats and petty cash, balances correctly with no shortages or overages. Strict adherence to company procedures is required to safeguard cash and maintain financial accuracy. Attention to detail and honesty are vital to prevent discrepancies and ensure compliance with internal controls.

Administrative responsibilities include signing, compiling, and filing all documentation related to cashier functions. Maintaining accurate records supports accountability and smooth store operations. Customer service is a central component of this position. The successful candidate must offer fast, friendly, and efficient service to all customers during the checkout process. Compliance with the company’s dress code and maintaining a professional appearance are also required.

Safety and security awareness are essential in this role. The cashier must ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHSA) requirements within the area of responsibility, prioritising the safety of both customers and staff. Any discrepancies must be reported to the Store Manager immediately. In addition, strict security practices must be followed, including safeguarding system passwords at the till point and ensuring secure handling and transport of cash to the cash office in line with CashBuild procedures.
