Applicants must have a minimum of Grade 10 or NQF Level 3 with at least one year of related work experience, or Grade 12 without related work experience. Candidates must be able to communicate effectively in English and the dominant language spoken in the geographical area where the position is available. A valid South African ID or work permit is required. Applicants must be able to perform basic calculations accurately and be willing to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays. The ability to work under pressure is essential.
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering comprehensive customer service within the store environment. This includes advising and assisting customers with product selection, responding to queries, and resolving customer complaints in a professional and efficient manner. Maintaining positive customer relationships and ensuring a pleasant shopping experience will be a key part of the role.
Merchandising forms a core responsibility of the position. The Store Assistant must ensure that bulk stock areas are merchandised safely and according to the store layout plan. The designated area of responsibility must always be fully stocked and aligned with approved planograms. Shelf price labelling must be accurate and updated to prevent customer confusion.
Housekeeping duties require ensuring that aisles are free from obstacles and that stock is merchandised immediately after receipt. The area must allow customers to move freely and safely without risk of injury or inconvenience. Required checklists, including those related to canteen and toilet/shower schedules, must be completed when on duty.
Compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHSA) requirements is mandatory. This includes the use of safety gear where necessary and ensuring that racking and bulk stock are displayed safely for both customers and colleagues. Any discrepancies or safety concerns must be reported to the Store Manager promptly.
The role also involves managing stock loss by reporting damaged stock within the designated area of responsibility. Candidates must demonstrate integrity by adhering to accepted standards, keeping promises, creating realistic expectations, handling sensitive information responsibly, and maintaining professional boundaries at all times.
