The University is currently seeking a permanent Grounds and Gardens staff member to provide pruning and related services that contribute to an aesthetically pleasing and well-maintained campus environment, aligned with the vision and mission of the Grounds and Gardens department.

The main objective of this role is to carry out pruning and vegetation management services across the campus and outlying areas under the University’s jurisdiction. The successful candidate will ensure that trees, shrubs, and landscaped areas are maintained to high visual and environmental standards. This includes removing alien plant species to preserve indigenous biodiversity and maintain ecological balance on campus. The position plays an important role in enhancing the natural beauty of the University while ensuring that outdoor spaces remain safe, tidy, and accessible for students, staff, and visitors.

The role requires practical, hands-on work involving pruning activities and the operation of specialised equipment. The incumbent must demonstrate practical knowledge of pruning machines and heavy-duty brush cutters, ensuring that equipment is used safely and effectively. Routine maintenance of landscaped areas, trimming overgrown vegetation, and maintaining clean grounds will form part of daily responsibilities. Adherence to safety standards and proper handling of equipment are essential to prevent accidents and maintain operational efficiency.

The qualification requirements for this position include Grade 10 or an equivalent qualification. Applicants must have at least six months of relevant experience, which includes previous pruning or gardening experience. Practical knowledge of pruning machinery and heavy-duty brush cutters is essential for the successful performance of this role.

The ideal candidate should be physically fit and capable of performing manual outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
