Within South Africa’s demanding mining and materials processing sector, Oza Holdings plays a key role in delivering reliable crushing and screening operations. The company is seeking a dedicated Assistant Mechanic to support plant maintenance while operating mobile crushing and screening equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and continuous production. This role combines hands-on mechanical assistance with operational responsibilities and is well suited to an individual with technical aptitude and strong safety awareness.

The successful candidate will be responsible for safely and efficiently operating mobile crushing and screening equipment in accordance with site procedures and production requirements. Daily duties include conducting pre-start inspections and performing equipment checks to ensure machinery is in good working condition before operations begin. Continuous monitoring of plant performance is required, with immediate reporting of any abnormalities to prevent breakdowns and production losses. The incumbent will adjust plant settings to maintain production targets and ensure consistent product quality. Maintaining high housekeeping standards around the plant and surrounding work areas is essential to support operational safety and efficiency. The role also involves assisting with plant start-up and shutdown procedures to ensure smooth transitions during operational cycles.

In addition to operational duties, the Assistant Mechanic will provide mechanical support to the maintenance team. This includes assisting with both planned and breakdown maintenance activities on crushers, screens, conveyors, pumps, and associated equipment. The candidate will perform basic mechanical tasks such as changing screens and crusher liners, carrying out greasing and lubrication activities, belt tracking and adjustments, and replacing basic components where required. Supporting fault finding processes and reporting mechanical issues accurately form part of the daily responsibilities. Strict compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act and site safety procedures is mandatory. The role requires active participation in toolbox talks and safety meetings, identification and reporting of unsafe conditions, and ensuring lock-out and isolation procedures are followed during maintenance interventions.

The qualification requirements for this position include Grade 12 or NQF Level 4. Candidates must have a minimum of two years’ experience within a crushing and screening or similar mining environment. Basic mechanical knowledge and practical experience using tools are essential. Experience operating mobile crushers and screens will be advantageous. A valid driver’s license is required, and applicants must be medically fit to work in a mining environment. Strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving ability, and the capacity to work under pressure are critical competencies for this role. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong safety awareness, good communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Willingness to work shifts and overtime when required is expected.

Previous experience in coal processing plants will be advantageous. Exposure to industry brands such as Metso, Sandvik, Powerscreen, Terex, or Finlay will be beneficial. A basic mechanical or engineering qualification will further strengthen an application.
