To qualify for this retail store position, applicants should have a minimum of Grade 10 or NQF Level 3 with at least one year of related work experience. If you have Grade 12 you don’t need to have experience. You must be able to communicate effectively in English and the dominant language of the area where the store operates. A valid South African ID or work permit is required. Basic calculation skills are important for handling pricing and stock tasks accurately. Since retail operates beyond standard office hours, you must be willing to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays, and be able to perform well under pressure.
Beyond customer service, you will also be responsible for merchandising and maintaining your designated area of responsibility. This includes ensuring that shelves are properly stocked, products are displayed according to the store layout and planograms, and bulk stock areas are arranged safely. Accurate shelf price labelling is important to avoid confusion and maintain transparency. Housekeeping plays a major role as well, as you must ensure your aisle is clean, obstacle-free, and safe for both customers and colleagues. Stock should be packed out promptly after receiving it, and walkways must remain clear to prevent safety risks.
Safety compliance is a key part of this retail job. You will be expected to follow Occupational Health and Safety requirements, including using safety gear where necessary and ensuring that stock is packed and stored securely. Reporting damaged stock, discrepancies, or safety concerns to the Store Manager is part of maintaining store integrity. Managing and reducing stock loss within your area will also contribute to the overall success of the business.
