Cashbuild is seeking a dedicated and customer-focused individual to join its team in the Free State. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about delivering excellent customer service while maintaining high merchandising, housekeeping, and safety standards within a retail environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that customers enjoy a safe, organised, and efficient shopping experience at all times.
The primary purpose of this position is to provide comprehensive customer service within the store while ensuring that stock merchandising, shelf price labelling, and housekeeping are maintained according to company standards within your designated area of responsibility. You will play a key role in assisting customers, maintaining store presentation, and supporting overall operational excellence.
To qualify for this role, applicants must have a minimum of Grade 10 or NQF Level 3 with at least one year of related work experience, or alternatively Grade 12 without related work experience. You must be able to communicate effectively in English as well as the dominant language spoken in the geographical area where the position is available. A valid South African ID or work permit is required. The ability to perform basic calculations accurately is essential. Candidates must be willing to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays, and be capable of working under pressure in a fast-paced retail environment.
Key responsibilities include advising and assisting customers with product selection and queries, as well as helping to resolve customer complaints in a professional and friendly manner. You will be expected to ensure that your bulk stock area is merchandised safely and in accordance with the store layout plan. Your designated section must always be fully merchandised according to approved planograms to ensure product visibility and accessibility.
Housekeeping is a critical component of this role. You must ensure that your area of responsibility remains free from obstacles, that stock is merchandised immediately after receipt, and that customers can move through your aisle safely without risk of injury or inconvenience. Accurate shelf price labelling within your section is mandatory. You will also be required to complete relevant checklists when on duty, including canteen and toilet/shower schedules where applicable.
Compliance with Safety (OHSA) requirements is essential. You must use appropriate safety gear and ensure both customer and staff safety within your area of responsibility. Stock on racking and in bulk areas must be merchandised in a manner that allows safe movement for customers and colleagues. Any discrepancies or safety concerns must be reported promptly to the Store Manager. Managing stock loss is another important responsibility, including reporting damaged stock within your section.
The ideal candidate will embody the company’s core values. Integrity is essential—you must comply with accepted standards, keep promises, create realistic expectations, and handle sensitive information responsibly. Accuracy is equally important, requiring careful attention to detail and an orderly approach to tasks from start to finish. A strong client focus is required, demonstrating friendliness, involvement in customer concerns, and a proactive, solution-oriented attitude.
Personal development is also encouraged in this role. The successful candidate should be aware of their strengths and areas for improvement, actively seek training opportunities, and welcome feedback as part of continuous growth.
If you are reliable, customer-oriented, and committed to maintaining high operational and safety standards, this opportunity at Cashbuild in the Free State offers a stable and rewarding career path within the retail building materials industry.
