Operational excellence in water services depends on disciplined, reliable support staff who ensure that facilities run safely and efficiently. At Overberg Waterboard, maintaining high standards in water and wastewater treatment operations is a priority, and the organisation is currently seeking a dedicated General Worker to support plant activities and site maintenance. This role is essential in ensuring that purification facilities, equipment, and surrounding premises remain functional, compliant, and well maintained in line with statutory and regulatory requirements.
The successful candidate will assist with a wide range of operational and maintenance duties within water facilities. The role also involves assisting with general maintenance, grounds keeping, and housekeeping of premises to ensure safe and clean working environments. The incumbent will handle and transport water quality samples, chemicals, and heavy materials or equipment as required. Additional duties include assisting with pipe bursts, cleaning reservoirs, sediment tanks, and filters, as well as clearing and disposing of grass, reedbeds, sludge, and other waste materials. General cleaning and maintenance of the purification plant, scheme offices, and associated buildings are part of daily responsibilities. The role further requires completion of work procedure forms, timesheets, stock sheets, log sheets, job cards, and other reporting documentation to maintain operational records.
To qualify for this position, applicants must have Grade 12 or Matric and/or relevant training. A valid, unendorsed Code B driver’s license is required. Candidates should have excellent communication, writing, and interpersonal skills to support teamwork and accurate reporting. A minimum of six months’ experience as a general worker, preferably within water facilities, is required. Applicants must be physically fit and willing to work shifts, standby duties, weekends, and public holidays when necessary. A clear understanding of ethical standards and adherence to statutory and legislative requirements related to water and wastewater operations is essential.
In addition to operational tasks, the General Worker will maintain an inventory of plant consumables required for daily activities, housekeeping, and other operational needs. Safeguarding plant assets at Public Works sites is a key responsibility, ensuring that equipment and materials are protected from damage or misuse. The incumbent must adhere strictly to all relevant statutory and regulatory requirements governing water and wastewater facilities, supporting compliance and environmental responsibility.
The position may require rotation or travel to other sites depending on operational demands, even if primarily based at a specific facility. The successful candidate must therefore demonstrate flexibility, accountability, and the ability to follow reasonable and lawful instructions from line managers or supervisors within the scope of the role and operational requirements.
This opportunity is ideal for a hardworking and dependable individual who is committed to maintaining high standards in public water services. If you possess the required qualifications, physical capability, and dedication to operational excellence, Overberg Waterboard invites you to apply and contribute to the sustainable management of essential water infrastructure.
